He has some interesting things to say that may shed some light on the Royals development of pitchers which has been criticized lately.
"Instead of me being a three-fourths pitcher where I get all my velocity from, they wanted me to come from the top," Flanagan said. "That gave me a lot of shoulder strain.
"They thought throwing over the top with my height, I was going to get more velocity. I was losing velocity doing it their way and gaining it doing it my way."
I have been wondering seriously lately about the Royals and the MLB as a whole and the development process. There is a great article at The Hardball Times about how poorly the MLB is a developing talent. We tend to blame bad drafting for the Royals woes, probably because it is easier to grasp, but isn't it possible that the development process is really to blame?
